Dear Dr. Patricia Bragg,

Each year, NDI grows and touches more people around the globe. Your generosity helps us do that. This year I was the first naturopathic physician along with Dr. Michael Cronin, to attend the WHO World Health Assembly. I am pictured here with Dr. Zhang, the head of the WHO traditional medicine department, advocating for naturopathic medicine globally. We are creating bridges, which will allow students and doctors to work in collaboration with the WHO in the future. The 2014 recipients of the Patricia and Paul C. Bragg Global Health Scholarships continue the traditional to grow natural medicine globally that this scholarship started when your vision began this amazing program. The Patricia and Paul C. Bragg Global Health Scholarship provides recipients the opportunity to serve and be a part of this bigger dream. I am truly thankful that your continued support allows us to get closer to that dream everyday.

With sincere gratitude, Dr. Tabatha Parker, NDI Executive Director

Dear Dr. Patricia Bragg,

I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for your generous donation, without which I would not have been able to participate in the global health course with Natural Doctors International this September. With this Patricia and Paul C. Bragg Global Health Scholarship, I was able to learn a great deal more about naturopathic medicine and global health, and contribute my clinical experience and skills of translation. I am thankful for the opportunity I received to use my knowledge to help those in need. I am also grateful for the opportunity to receive some great clinical wisdom from the excellent NDI team of naturopathic doctors and the psychologist. I am so thankful for your support, and I look forward to carrying this experience with me throughout my career in naturopathic medicine.

Sincerely, Raul Guzman, Student of Naturopathic Medicine, Universidad del Turabo Puerto Rico, Recipient 2014

Dear Dr. Bragg,

I am writing to thank you for your generous donation, which allowed me to participate in the September 2014 global health brigade with Natural Doctors International where I worked in the clinic, helping to provide nutrition consultations and shadowed naturopathic doctors. It was an incredible learning experience. The clinic provided many opportunities to give nutritional advice to patients with a variety of health concerns ranging from diabetes to chronic inflammation to anemia. It was inspiring and at times heartbreaking work, and I learned a great deal about naturopathic medicine in a global setting. With this Patricia and Paul C. Bragg Global Health Scholarship I increased my knowledge and awareness of global health issues, gained invaluable hands-on experience, and was inspired to make global health a part of my future career. Thank you for making this a possibility for me. I will never forget the lessons in life and medicine that I learned from the doctors, other students, and patients at the clinic on Ometepe. I look forward to incorporating everything I learned into my future work toward a healthier planet.

Sincerely, Emily Brumstead, Student of Nutrition, Bastyr University, Washington, Recipient 2014

Dear Dr. Patricia Bragg,

As I anticipated, it is very hard to express and convey the magnitude of my gratitude with words. My gratitude extends to NDI for the immensely important work they are doing and to you Dr. Bragg, for supporting NDI’s vision and the student global health experience. Born and raised in Jamaica and living around the world I was always exposed to the grave disparities that existed in health care provision and access. What was unique about my time with NDI is that for the first time I felt I was experiencing the solution rather than just the problem. My time with my host family and work in the fields allowed me to truly understand the range of conditions we saw in the clinic. Working with amazing doctors and NDI team, I saw more diverse and numerous patient cases in four clinic days than I have in my entire student career. Needless to say I learned so much about medicine, humanity, and myself. Since my trip to Ometepe, I have felt excited, inspired and re-energized about my studies at Bastyr and future career. I have a newfound clarity in the role of Naturopathic Medicine in the global health arena and truly look forward to applying my new knowledge to my future work in Jamaica. I sincerely thank you for providing me with the Patricia and Paul C. Bragg Global Health Scholarship, which literally made a dream become a reality, and brought so much clarity to a life’s vision. Without your support I would not have been able to afford the cost of this experience.

Sincerely, Kimani MacDonald, Student of Naturopathic Medicine, Bastyr University, Washington, Recipient 2014

Dear Dr. Patricia Bragg,

I am writing to thank you for your generous donation, which allowed me to participate in the April 2014 global health brigade with Natural Doctors International. During the brigade I worked in the clinic, helping to provide nutrition consultations, assisting with translation and shadowing naturopathic doctors. It was an incredible learning experience. Although lack of resources presents many challenges, patients are open to making the dietary changes they can to address their conditions. I have always wanted to connect the worlds of social service with holistic medicine, and NDI does just that. With this Patricia and Paul C. Bragg Global Health Scholarship I increased my knowledge and awareness of global health issues, gained invaluable hands-on experience, and was inspired to make global health a part of my future career. Thank you for making the NDI brigade possible for me.

Sincerely, Rachel Fiske, Holistic Nutritionist, Recipient 2014

Dear Dr. Patricia Bragg,

I am writing to thank you for your generous donation which allowed me to participate in the March 2014 global health/ herbalist brigade with Natural Doctors International. I am Director of a small nonprofit working with some of the poorest and most underprivileged children and youth in Nicaragua. We provide a comprehensive, holistic after school program, and by attending this brigade I was able to gain greater knowledge of the role natural medicine could play in the health of our children and community. I sat in on many consultations, and most of the issues were things that I have seen in my own community. My hope is that someday we can incorporate natural medicine in our program in Nagarote.

With much gratitude, Ronnie Ellen Maher, Director, NicaPhoto, Inc, Recipient 2014

Dear Dr. Patricia Bragg,

I am writing to thank you for your donation, which allowed me to participate with NDI in April 2014. This beautiful experience helped me to grow in so many ways. The Island of Ometepe is the most beautiful and magical place I have ever visited. I am so grateful to have met excellent doctors and staff that are committed to their work and to the people. I was able to see the variety of clinical tools such as physical examination, clinical diagnosis, botanical treatments, acupuncture, homeopathy, psychological counseling, and nutrition. My experience with the patients was very special and I was able to connect with their suffering and necessities. This is why I have decided that I will do whatever is in my power to help NDI grow and expand to other countries. Because my first language is Spanish I was able to translate. I see myself in the future working as a doctor in Ometepe. Thanks to the Patricia and Paul C. Bragg Global Health Scholarship I gained hands on experience, new knowledge and new friends that in 10 short days became my family. I will never forget this experience – thank you very much.

Warm regards, Carla M Sanchez Vivaldi, 5th year ND Student, Turabo University, Puerto Rico, Recipient 2014

Dear Dr. Patricia Bragg,

Thank you for the opportunity given to me to visit and learn in Nicaragua. It was the most growing experience that I have had as a student and as a person. This amazing experience was only possible because of the grant given to me and I would be thrilled for others to receive it in the future. I do recommend for all students to have this field experience and not only is NDI helping a beautiful and at-need community, but also enriching us Naturopathic Medicine students. Again I say thank you for this wonderful experience.

With great gratitude,
Dr. Alec M. Laracuente Ph.D, 5th year ND Student, Turabo University, Puerto Rico
Recipient 2014

Dear Dr. Patricia Bragg,

I write with gratitude in my heart for the Patricia and Paul C. Bragg Global Health Scholarship. Because of this assistance, I was able to participate in a brigade for NDI in Nicaragua, where I could put my interests in natural medicine to good work in the deserving community. As an anthropology enthusiast, I’m always excited to explore a new culture and gain a clearer understanding about the current issues in global health. As a student of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, I was so happy to see integrative medicine in action on our brigade, where acupuncturists worked alongside naturopaths and massage therapists to treat patients in the most comprehensive way possible. I’m already looking forward to the next brigade!

Sincerely, Juli Yelnick, Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine student, National University of Health Sciences, Lombard,
Illinois, Recipient 2014

Dear Dr. Patricia Bragg,

Thank you for your generous donation and making my time with NDI an incredible experience. It was truly an honor to be able to serve the Ometepe community and put skills and knowledge into practice as well as learn new ones during the medical
brigade. My time with NDI reaffirmed my commitment to public service and strengthened my commitment to and knowledge about global health and social justice. Thank you again for your contribution and allowing me to learn and work alongside the amazing NDI team of staff and volunteers.

Sincerely, Brenda Hernandez, MPS Candidate 2015, University of Arkansas, Clinton
School of Public Service, Recipient 2014

Dear Dr. Patricia Bragg,

I am so grateful to be writing this letter to you about my wonderful experience in Nicaragua that you made possible with your kind scholarship. NDI was an amazing experience that allowed me to work elbow to elbow with naturopaths, psychologists, students of natural medicine and students of acupuncture. I was able to share my experience and knowledge of Chinese Medicine with everyone on the trip, which is something I am so passionate about. We treated over 100 patients during the week that I was there and each patient effected me so deeply with their stories and health issues. I learned a great deal from the NDI Medical Director, Dr. Dawson Farr. The amount of great work that NDI does is priceless. With the Patricia and Paul C. Bragg Global Health Scholarship, I was afforded the opportunity to make global health a priority in my life. I look forward to future brigades and have taken the knowledge and experience back to the states with me to share with others. Once again, many thank you’s for the opportunity and experience.

With kindest regards, Natalia Eichstaedt, L.Ac, Recipient 2014
